Lichfield Cathedral Library and the Chapel of St. John’s, Lichfield

The library, which has been housed in the upper room of the Chapter House since
1758, is home to a globally important collection of ancient books and manuscripts.
This year the focus is on the William Seymour Bequest. He was the brother of
Jane Seymour and died in 1660. His wife, the Duchess of Somerset bequeathed his
library of fine manuscripts and gospels to the Cathedral.

Please note that the access is up a spiral staircase of 35 steep steps and it is
suggested that masks are worn in the library.

We will meet at 10.20 am at the Cathedral West Door for the tour of the library
which takes 1½ hours and costs £18 per person.

We will then walk or take our own cars to St. John’s (½ mile), so we can be
admitted together.

The private chapel in the Priory of St. John Baptist has a large vibrant stained
glass window designed by John Piper (1903-1992). He was a war artist who later
designed large glass windows for many cathedrals, smaller churches and schools
including the bowed baptistry window for the new Coventry Cathedral.
St. John’s make no charge but a donation would be much appreciated.

The minimum number for the first tour is 10, max.13. However, if more than 18
want to visit the library, the librarian will provide a second tour at 2pm, with 9
attending each tour.
